Mexico prepares for aftermath of Hurricane Patricia
Mexico prepares for aftermath of Hurricane Patricia Hurricane Patricia has made landfall in south west Mexico, in what is said to be the strongest storm on record.
The storm had 200-mph sustained winds and was a Category 5 hurricane. Heavy damage appears to have been avoided, but there is still a risk of major floods and mudslides.
The storm was comparable in size to Typhoon Haiyan, which killed 6,300 people in the Philippines in 2013, the World Meteorological Organisation says. A state of emergency has been declared in three states in Patricia’s path. An estimated 400,000 people are living in vulnerable areas.
Caritas Mexico has experienced emergency staff on standby.
