Human Trafficking in Armed Conflicts and Post-Conflict Situations

This week Caritas Internationalis, Secours Catholique (Caritas France) and the Order of Malta, with the support of COATNET, held Human Trafficking in Armed Conflicts and Post-Conflict Situations, a side event for the 52nd Regular Session of the Human Rights Council at the Palais des Nations – United Nations in Geneva. This panel discussion event – co-sponsored by the Permanent Missions of the Costa Rica, Italy, Poland, Romania and the Sovereign Order of Malta – elaborated on the impact of armed conflicts on human rights and on the vulnerability of people to human trafficking. The panellists also spoke of the need for stronger cooperation among humanitarian and civil society organisations to better support and rehabilitate victims of trafficking.

Over 150,000 families without adequate shelter in Syria after the earthquake

According to UNHCR, widespread destruction of buildings and homes has displaced 150,000 households across Syria and 900,000 people are in urgent need of shelter. To date, an estimated 50,000 people are dead and an additional 110,000 have been left injured by the earthquake on February 6th. These figures continue to rise as search and rescue efforts continue in both Syria and Turkey.

Embrace Equality, Encounter, Renewal: Caritas’ Commitment to Promote Women in the Church and Society 

This year Caritas Internationalis is present at the 67th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (March 6-17) at the UN headquarters in New York. In celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8), Caritas held a webinar titled ‘Embrace equality, encounter, renewal’ in connection with the 2023 theme ‘DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality’.

Global Caritas Network Joins Forces To Support Syrian and Turkish People 

Death and injury tolls continues to rise as the search continues for missing loved ones in Syria and Turkey. A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey on Monday (February 6), followed by 100 aftershocks throughout the week, also impacting the population in neighbouring Syria.
